Fit guide

Measure once, order once: the Safety Innovations fit guide

Six measurements cover the whole range. You need a tape measure and two minutes per room.

Outlets: count the screws

Look at the plate around the outlet. One screw in the middle means a standard duplex outlet. Two screws, one above and one below a rectangular face, means Decora. The self-closing outlet covers fit the first, the Decora covers fit the second, and the Twin Door box comes with plates for both.

If a plug lives in the outlet, measure it. The box is 5 3/8 inches tall, 3 3/16 wide and 2 3/4 deep inside.

Banister posts: measure across

Measure the newel post straight across, just above the bottom step, where the lower clamp will sit. Measure again higher up where the upper clamp goes. A round post is measured across its widest point.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to use only gates that screw to the wall at the top of the stairs. The kit gives a hardware-mounted gate something to screw into at a banister post, without drilling the post.

Interior doors: check the edge and the gap

The door top lock fits interior doors 1 3/8 inches thick, which is the usual interior door. Measure the door edge. Then check the gap between the top of the closed door and the frame: it needs to be at least as thick as a quarter. Doors with weather stripping do not work.

Reach matters too. Your hand has to get within 6 inches of the top of the door, or the 8-inch wand that comes with the lock does it for you.

Bi-fold doors

The bi-fold lock fits bi-fold doors from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches thick. It does not fit sliding closet doors or standard hinged doors.

Windows

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says to limit window openings to four inches or less. Open the window to that gap, mark the frame, and stick the Window Widget strip there. The strip is 7 3/4 inches long, so you can move the stop point later.

Cabinets: look for a frame

Open the cabinet and look at the edge around the opening. If there is a face frame, a strip of wood around the front, the drawer latches will catch on it. Frameless cabinets have nothing for the latch to hold.

Furniture and TVs

Measure from the back of the furniture to the nearest stud. The anti-tip straps adjust up to 36 inches.

Questions

Fit questions

How do you tell a standard outlet from a Decora outlet?

By the plate. A standard duplex outlet has two round-ish faces and one screw in the middle of the plate. A Decora outlet has a rectangular face and its plate is held by two screws, top and bottom.

What if your newel post is 3 5/8 inches?

That is the very top of what the clamps reach. Measure again at the height where the lower clamp will sit, and if it reads over 3 5/8 anywhere, the kit will not fit that post.

Can you use the door top lock on a bathroom door?

Yes, if it is a 1 3/8-inch interior door without weather stripping. Keep a way to open it from both sides in mind for an emergency.
