The pieces people search for

Safety Innovations outlet covers, gate kits and locks

The six pieces of the Safety Innovations collection parents ask us about most, with what each one fits and what it does not.

Safety Innovations outlet cover box

For the outlet behind the crib with a monitor adapter in it. The box is 5 3/8 inches tall inside and 2 3/4 deep, so a bulky plug and its cord stay put while both doors are shut. Opening it takes a thumb on the top button and one on the bottom.

Safety Innovations stairway gate mounting kit

Two clamps close around the newel post and hold a 36-inch wood strip. Your gate screws into the strip, so the banister keeps its finish. Measure the post first: plan on 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches wide, square or round.

Door top lock

It sits on top of the door, out of reach, and slides over the frame to hold the door shut. It works with lever handles and odd knobs because it never touches the handle. It needs a 1 3/8-inch interior door and one small peg drilled into the frame.

From $9.29 ยท 4.1 stars from 1,964 ratings

Bi-fold door lock

A clear bar that rests across the top of two bi-fold panels so they cannot fold open. Nothing to drill and no adhesive. It fits doors 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches thick, and a wand in the box lets a shorter adult reach it.

From $15.95 ยท 4.7 stars from 8,304 ratings

Window Widget

A plastic wedge on a hook-and-loop strip that stops a window at the gap you choose. The strip is 7 3/4 inches long, so you set the stop point yourself. Pull the wedge off the strip and the window opens fully.

From $12.95 ยท 4.2 stars from 648 ratings

Anti-tip straps

Two black straps that tie a dresser, bookcase or TV to the wall. Each one adjusts up to 36 inches with a metal buckle, and the screws and brackets come in the pack. Anchor into a stud where you can.

Room by room

What most homes need, and where

Start with the rooms your child spends the most time in, and work outward. The Safety Innovations childproofing line covers all four.

Nursery and bedrooms

Outlets near the crib, the dresser, and the window you open in summer.

Stairs and halls

A gate at the bottom and the top, and walls that the gate should not dent.

Kitchen and bath

Drawers with knives, doors to the bathroom, the curtain rod a toddler pulls on.

Living room

Every outlet at crawling height, the TV, and closet doors that fold.

About Safety Innovations

Drawn up by a childproofer, not by a catalog

Safety Innovations makes the hardware a professional childproofer reaches for when the store version does not fit: a box deep enough for a monitor plug, a banister kit that never drills the post, a lock for doors that fold.

The Safety Innovations team has sold them since 2008, and each one started with a house where the usual product would not fit.

Six things to measure

Two minutes with a tape measure saves a return. The Safety Innovations fitting notes on each product page, and the fit guide, walk through every one.

  1. 01

Count the screws on the outlet plate

One screw in the middle means a standard outlet. Two screws, top and bottom, means Decora. The self-closing plates come in both.

  2. 02

    Check what stays plugged in

If a plug or adapter lives in the outlet, you need the cover box, not a plate. Caps are for outlets nobody uses.

  3. 03

    Measure the newel post

Across the post just above the bottom step. The stairway kit is made for 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches.

  4. 04

    Measure the door edge

The door top lock is made for 1 3/8-inch interior doors. Bi-fold panels can be 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches.

  5. 05

    Look above the door

The door top lock needs you to reach within 6 inches of the top of the door, or use the 8-inch wand in the box.

  6. 06

Decide how far the window may open

The Window Widget stops wherever you put it. The safety agency figure to aim for is 4 inches or less.

Questions

Safety Innovations questions from parents

The ones we answer most often, in a line or two.

Where can you buy Safety Innovations products?

Every product page has a button that opens our retail partner in a new tab, on the exact product and pack you picked. Payment, delivery and returns happen there.

Which outlet cover do you need?

Count the screws on your outlet plate. One screw in the middle takes the standard self-closing plate, two screws take the Decora plate. If a plug stays in the outlet all the time, you want the Twin Door outlet cover box instead.

Will the Safety Innovations stairway kit fit your banister?

Measure the newel post across, just above the bottom step. Plan on 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches, square or round. The clamps reach 3 5/8 inches, so a post right at the top of the range should be measured twice. The fit check on our fit guide does the arithmetic.

Do you have to drill to fit these products?

Most go on without drilling: the bi-fold lock, the Window Widget, the wall and floor savers and the outlet caps. Outlet plates and the cover box use the outlet screws. The door top lock needs one 1/8-inch pilot hole in the frame, and the stairway kit needs pilot holes in its own wood strip, never in the post.

Can you use them in a rental?

Yes, and much of the range was drawn up with that in mind. The banister kit leaves no holes in the post, the bi-fold lock and Window Widget need no screws, and the Wall Saver pads protect the paint from a pressure gate.

How long has Safety Innovations been around?

We started in 2008, which makes it 18 years. The range was designed by a professional childproofer and has grown one fit problem at a time.
